About Australia

Australia is one of the only countries with world-class cities, snowfields, deserts, rainforests and golden beaches. We have nearly 8 million km˛ to share, so if your going to come to Australia, grab your thongs (and your flip flops) and get ready for an adventure — Aussie style!

Australia’s awesome natural beauty is renowned worldwide. And while Australians are proud of the diverse landscape, we are equally proud of the diversity of our people and you can expect a warm welcome in every part of our land.

Australians are laid back, as we know you'll become accustomed to, enjoying our food and our sport are essential for us Aussies. If you can’t find us at the local footy ground cheering our team on a Saturday afternoon, then chances are we’re enjoying the day with friends or working hard to maintain the magnificence of our majestic land.

States and Territories
The states originated as separate British colonies prior to Federation (in 1901). Their powers are protected by the Australian constitution, and Commonwealth legislation only applies to the states where permitted by the constitution. The territories, by contrast, are from a constitutional perspective directly subject to the Commonwealth government. The Australian Parliament has powers to legislate in the territories that it does not possess in the states. >>>>>
Currency
Australia was the first country in the world to have a complete system of bank notes based on plastic. These notes provide much greater security against counterfeiting. They also last four times as long as conventional paper notes. The innovative technology by which the notes are produced, developed entirely in Australia, offers artists brilliant scope for the creation of images that reflect the histories and natural environments of their countries. At the same time the polymer notes are cleaner than paper notes and easily recyclable. >>>>>
Climate
Australia is a continent that experiences a variety of climates due to its size. The weather can range from below zero temperatures in the Snowy Mountains to intolerable heat in the north-west.

The temperate south has cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. In the north, a tropical climate prevails with a warm, dry season and a hot, wet season.  The temperatures vary from an average 30 degrees C in midsummer in the Red Centre, to an average of 6 degrees C in the highlands in winter. >>>>>
